Description

A woman awakes from a coma and slowly figures out what happened to her and what is wrong in her life. A Korean War veteran, an inveterate smoker, at an al fresco table with a younger couple. A bright, turmoiled teen schemes to make her still-secret pregnancy palatable to her parents.

"Middle Distance" comprises short stories of 5,000 to 9,000 words written between 1990 and 2017 by journalist Chuck Twardy, who has written feature articles and reviews of art, architecture and books for newspapers and other publications since 1982. Six stories chronicle the life of alter ego Castor from eighth grade to early middle age. Other stories range widely in protagonists, plots and places, from an executive superintending a casino implosion in 2055 Las Vegas to a harried mother managing dense traffic and an obstreperous child in contemporary Raleigh, North Carolina.

Pittsburgh native Chuck Twardy earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in English at Northwestern University in 1977. He earned a Master of Science in Journalism from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism in 1981.

He started his newspaper career as the arts editor at the Lawrence Journal-World in Lawrence, Kansas. For The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, he wrote feature articles and covered the visual arts. He went on to be art and architecture critic for The Orlando Sentinel in Orlando, Florida, and for The News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Twardy turned to freelancing in 1996, writing for publications such as Metropolis and World Architecture, and in 2000 he moved to Las Vegas, where he regularly contributed to Las Vegas Weekly as an art critic and culture columnist until 2006. He continued to write for Las Vegas Weekly until 2017, mostly as a book reviewer, and he is a member of the National Book Critics Circle.

He started teaching as an adjunct instructor for the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies in 2006 and served in a similar role for the School of Communication at East Carolina University after moving back to North Carolina the next year. He became a full-time instructor at the school in 2010 and retired in 2020.
